My Liturgy Rant

By Ben Yanke on February 25, 2012

Ugh. Tonight, due to a situation not entirely under my control, I went to Mass at a parish outside the small circle of ones I frequently attend.

I won’t say publicly what parish it was, but let’s just say the Mass was interesting.

The servers where jumping up and down the sanctuary steps as well as projecting an air of general cluelessness the entire Mass, the celebrant opted for the ugly (and illicit) over-stole, the music was definitively NOT in line with what the church asks of us, but worst of all, the cantor sung some of the celebrant’s parts instead of the celebrant, and during the communion rite, nonetheless!!

Ah yes, pray for me that I increase have patience. I stayed calm most of Mass in my pithy attempts at prayer, but when the cantor started singing the priest’s prayers, I was a little more than ticked off. It’s days like today that I praise God for my great parish, and also pray for lots of vocations, but vocations of men who will respect the liturgy. We aren’t in the 70s anymore, people.

Ah, heck with it. I’m not afraid to say in public that these shenanigans happened at St. Peter’s Parish in Madison, WI at the Saturday evening Mass on February 25, 2012. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. James McEnery, and the pastor of the parish who is responsible for all of this is Fr. Charles Schluter. So there. Now you know.

Thus endeth my rant.

Thank goodness I’ll soon be back at my safe haven Cathedral Parish with it’s excellent liturgy and true sacred music with the good Bishop Morlino, then to schola rehearsal later in the afternoon.

I’d like to think of it as my “liturgical detox” after this evening. :)
